THE BRITISH OVERSEAS RAILWAYS HISTORICAL TRUST
|
Following on from the Nigerian reference sources this document is to assist in research on the railways of Asia. See also the dedicated page on Indian railway research.
Firstly, a word of warning, there has been a spate in recent years of people finding books that are out of copyright, OCR’ing them and offering the copies for sale. Admittedly they do warn that the copies may not be perfect. The Trust brought a copy of a French book on African Colonial Railways that is extremely rare but found that no more than 25% of the pages were legible.
On this page, we have listed a selection of Asian Railways about which we are aware that there was British influence and if anything has been written about them. It is likely that the page will be supplemented in the future.
Some of the titles below are available in the British Library and can be found by searching their catalogue.
Journal articles listed should be available through JSTOR or appropriate online sources.
There is the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland see Royal Asiatic Society. They publish a quarterly journal but no listing of articles was found, nor could the journal archives be searched. They have a number of sister societies, including Hong Kong, Malaya and Sri Lanka and several in India.

Myanmar was one of the final countries in the world to operate steam locomotives in revenue service and it is probable that several locomotives are still in working condition. These are typically metre-gauge locomotives of Indian standard designs, including YC 4-6-2s and YD 2-8-2s. The recent political situation in the country has made it difficult for groups to arrange tours.
Burma has two museums dedicated to the Thailand to Burma "death railway" built by WW2 prisoners of war:
Beyond the two museums listed above, we have found no trace of any railway museum in Myanmar, there may still be steam locomotives dumped around the country. However, Burma Railways No.1 2-4-0T Dubs 612/1873 is plinthed outside railway headquarters in Yangon. 2-6-2T No. 351 is in the People's Park, Yangon and 4-6-4T No. 144 BP 5923/1916 is at Pansodan Station.
