On Saturday 5th April at 19:00hrs GMT, Glyn Thomas will speak on the Brief and Eventful History of the British-Financed Shanghai-Nanking Railway (1898-1949) via Teams.
The Shanghai-Nanking Railway was built as a British concession railway linking two of China's most important cities. Built between 1905 and 1908, the line saw only brief periods of stability. At several times in its existence it was embroiled in major regional conflicts that often caused significant damage and interruption of services. The line was nationalized by the People's Republic of China in 1949, and became a major trunk route. A parallel route was used for China's first major high-speed railway.
This talk will concentrate on the period when the railway operated as a separate entity, largely under joint Chinese-British control, and briefly touch on the World War 2 period of Japanese occupation.
