Reference Sources for East African Railways

EAR Royal Train

This page is to assist in research on East African Railways.  Please also reference our general African page for further ideas.

It has been decided to cover Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zanzibar in one document given their interlinked history.  There will also be a separate section for items that are country specific.

Firstly, a word of warning, there has been a spate in recent years of people finding books that are out of copyright, OCR’ing them and offering the copies for sale. Admittedly they do warn that the copies may not be perfect.  The Trust brought a copy of a French book on African Colonial Railways that is extremely rare but found that no more than 25% of the pages were legible.

East Africa has an overall detailed but dated history of its railways.

On this page, the term East African Railways is an overarching cover for the current Kenyan, Ugandan and Tanzanian Railways, and their various constituents.

Some of the titles below are available in the British Library and can be found by searching their catalogue.

Journal articles listed should be available through JSTOR or appropriate online sources.

In producing these research files use has been made of the following reference source: TRANSPORT RESEARCH BIBLIOGRAPHY, Gordon Pirie, African Centre for Cities University of Cape Town December 2018, however much additional material has been added.

East African Railways and Harbours (mccrow.org.uk)
Would appear to be a site of interest.

The Historical Association of Kenya produced the Kenya Historical Review from 1973-78.  Copies are available in the British Library.

Tanganyika Notes and Records was started in 1936 by what was then the Tanganyika Society, becoming Tanzanian Notes and Records upon independence and continued until 1985.  Editions up to 1951 are available through https://gallica.bnf.fr/ and the School of Oriental and African Studies has some.

The Uganda Society (upenn.edu)

In 1923 The Uganda Literary and Scientific Society was established at Entebbe.  Its main activity consisted of the reading of papers and the delivery of lectures on topics relating to Uganda.  The Society headquarters were movedto Kampala in 1933 and a decision was taken to issue a regular publication, The Uganda Journal.  The journal's declared aim was "to collect and publish information which may add to our knowledge of Uganda and to record that which in the course of time might be lost." Four issues per year were published, beginning in January 1934.  Each issue was to contain three or four substantial articles, along with a series of short notes, as well as letters and reviews.  The Uganda Literary and Scientific Society later changed its name to the Uganda Society.  Fortunately, the Journals are available on-line at The Uganda Journal. | Library of Congress (loc.gov)

The East African Railways and Harbours Administration produced a staff magazine from June 1952 until February 1961 when it was renamed Spear which continued at least until the incorporation of the EAR Corporation in approximately 1969.

The Kenyan Railway Museum is located in Nairobi off Workshop Road close to the railway station.  It has a Facebook page Nairobi Railway Museum - Home | Facebook  It has issued Guides to the Museum in 1978 and 1983.

Tanzania does not have a railway museum

The Ugandan Railway Museum is located at Jinja Station and was opened in May 2022, it does not appear to have a functioned webpage.  In 2021 a book was published in Uganda possibly by the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda,  called Our Railway, Our History, nothing more is known.
