Bagnall & Baguley

Bagnall, W. G. Ltd. Stafford Founded by William Gordon Bagnall in 1875. (Lowe). First locomotive was an 0-4-0ST supplied to the Duke of Buckingham for the Wootton Tramway. Lowe notes that the appointment of Samuel T. Price introduced a "mainstay of the company for design and production". By 1892 about 140 locomotives had been produced. E.E. Baguley (below) joinded the firm in 1891 but left to found his own business. Output included some for the mainline companies: 25 class 3 0-6-0Ts for the LMS and a further seven for the SDJR, and fifty 0-6-0PTs for the GWR. Later 52 Austerity 0-6-0STs were manufactured during WW2. The manufacture of fireless locomotives began in 1924 with one for the papermills of Edward Lloyd at Sittingbourne (see Brian Syddall in Backtrack, 15, 252) (a 2-4-0 for the 2ft 6in gauge system). This was the first of fifteen fireless locomotives manufactured. The last steam locomotive to be manufactured was a narrow gauge 2-8-2 (WN 3126) for the Mysore Iron & Steel Works. Bagnall, William Gordon
Marshall states that born at Cliff Hall, Tamworth on 19 January 1852 and died on 19 July 1907. He was educated privately, entered banking, but then joined John Bagnall & Sons of West Bromwich. In 1876 he moved to Stafford and joined Massey & Hill's small millwright's business. He then established his own works which supplied light locomotives mainly for narow gauge railways. Founder of W.G. Bagnall, Castle Engine Works in Stafford in 1875.

Baguley, E. E. Ltd., Shobnall Road, Burton-on-Trent Baguley had been employed by W.G. Bagnall but in 1911 left to form Baguley (Cars) Ltd in Burton-on-Trent. In 1920 the firm's name was changed to Baguley (Engineers) Ltd. Baguley was an inventor of a valve gear, also used at Bagnall's. He developed the Rail-Grip patented locomotive in 1923 (this applied additional power to grooved wheels through a jackshaft and assisted adhesion on steep gradients). An experimental locomotive was patented but not built: a two speed geared locomotive with a high pressure Clarkson Thimble boiler. Baguley was also involved witth internal combustion locomotives. Lowe lists the locomotives (all narrow gauge except one) output between 1919 and 1928.

Baguley, Ernest Edwin
Baguley had been employed by W.G. Bagnall but left Bagnall to be the manager of Ryknield Engine Company Ltd in 1902: this failed in 1905 and was reformed as Ryknield Motor Company 16 May 1906. At around this time he went to BSA to manage car production there. In 1910 Ryknield Motor Company was put into liquidation (28 Jul source Lichfield Record office BD110/96) and at  around the same time BSA bought Daimler from the reciever and closed their car department in favour of using the Daimler factory. Baguley started Baguley Cars Ltd to take over the defunct Ryknield Motor Co in Sept 1911. He served with the BEF in France and achieved the rank of Major. In 1920 the firm's name was changed to Baguley (Engineers) Ltd. Baguley was an inventor of a valve gear in 1893, whilst at Bagnall's.
