THE BRITISH OVERSEAS RAILWAYS HISTORICAL TRUST
| ![]() |
Following on from the earlier reference sources this document is to assist in research on Army Medical Services use of Military Railways. You are encouraged to look at the other research pages for further ideas, as there may be some duplication of material, and those pages will also give an overall history of the railway. Also, please look at the general research page as that contains many sources that may be of assistance. Links to the Official Medical Histories can be found on the general military railways page.
Within the Commonwealth Armies, the various medical corps are considered non-combatants and are protected under the Geneva Convention. In the case of military railways only two Corps need concern us, the Medical Corps and Nursing Corps. They are the people who staff the Ambulance Trains. The Dental Corps are not involved in Ambulance Trains.
“Sadly, very few people have any real understanding of the role and capabilities of ambulance trains. Railways are, however, a very well proven method of transporting a large number of sick and wounded. Ambulance trains do not move anyone anywhere fast, but they will move large numbers in warmth, light, relative comfort and receiving medical and nursing care.” (Brian Robertson, 2024) The earliest recorded use of railways to move casualties if from the Crimean War of 1855. The first record of an ambulance train being prepared for use by the British Army is from the Egyptian Campaign of 1882. The British Army did not have a dedicated ambulance train until the South African War of 1899-1902.
The last British Ambulance Train unit was disbanded in 1994.
We would like to thanks Col (Retd) Brian Robertson for his help in compiling this listing.
In writing up these very brief histories, use has been made of Wikipedia. They are summaries only.
See the following pages for details of the corps in each commonwealth country:
We have placed all references here to avoid duplication in the individual Corps histories.
