THE BRITISH OVERSEAS RAILWAYS HISTORICAL TRUST
|
Following on from the Nigerian reference sources this document is to list reference sources that deal with South Africa and Swaziland (now Eswatini). You are encouraged to look at the general African page as well.
Firstly, a word of warning, there has been a spate in recent years of people finding books that are out of copyright, OCR’ing them and offering the copies for sale. Admittedly they do warn that the copies may not be perfect. The Trust brought a copy of a French book on African Colonial Railways that is extremely rare but found that no more than 25% of the pages were legible.
Some of the titles below are available in the British Library and can be found by searching their catalogue.
Journal articles listed should be available through JSTOR or appropriate online sources.
There is a Southern African Historical Society, but it is mainly aimed at professional historians and we cannot find a list of publications.
There is also the South African Military History Society which has published articles on railways and the older back numbers are available online.
South African Railways and Harbours often in conjunction with the local town Tourist Board provided an extensive series of booklets on many towns in the 1920-30’s. We have not listed them all, as this page would grow to an unwieldly size. These can be found be searching on World Cat, likewise searching World Cat gave another extensive series of survey reports for proposed or constructed railway lines, again these have not been listed.
The South African Railway and Harbour Journal has been put online on Jan Haarhoff's South African Railway History site. This site also has good coverage of WW1 for Southern and East Africa and some Western Front where South Africans were involved.
There are the following railway museums/preservation centres known to exist in South Africa.
The James Hall Museum of Transport, Johannesburg, although it does not have a large railway collection the range of exhibits is highly recommended. It is free to enter, but donations are of course welcomed.
The Natal Railway Museum at Hilton.
The Outeniqua Transport Museum is a railway museum located in George, South Africa. The Outeniqua Railway Museum is one of Transnet Heritage Foundation museums. Situated in the former PX-goods shed in George, the museum opened on 24 September 1998. The museum collection consists of a total of 21 steam locomotives and a total of 22 coaches among other vehicles. It does not appear to have it’s own website but contact details are at Outeniqua Transport Museum, George.
Outeniqua Choo Tjoe - the beloved steam train that once ran between Knysna and George, and that’s now owned (and will be operated) by Classic Rail as of 2019.
Sandstone Heritage Trust Sandstone is NOT a railway museum it is a working farm that runs approximately 3 heritage events during the year. It is slowly reopening after the pandemic and has moved 3’ 6” equipment here from Bloemfontein and Krugersdorp.
