Train de Luxe - Sudan

This page is to assist in research on Sudan Railways. Please also reference our Nigerian page for further ideas.

Firstly, a word of warning, there has been a spate in recent years of people finding books that are out of copyright, OCR’ing them and offering the copies for sale. Admittedly they do warn that the copies may not be perfect. The Trust brought a copy of a French book on African Colonial Railways that is extremely rare but found that no more than 25% of the pages were legible.

Sudan has an overall detailed but dated history of its railways.

On this page, the term Sudan Railways as an overarching cover for the current Sudan Railways, and its various constituents, which include various Sudan Military Railways and the Red Sea coast light railways.

Some of the titles below are available in the British Library and can be found by searching their catalogue.

Journal articles listed should be available through JSTOR or appropriate online sources.

Professor Richard Leslie Hill worked on Sudan Railways from 1929-44 and was co-founder of the Sudan Archives at the University of Durham in 1957. In 2005 the Sudan Archive was granted Designated status by the Museum, Libraries and Archives Council, identifying the collection as one of pre-eminent national and international importance.

The Melik Society – Preserving the Gunboat Melik - the aim of the Melik Society was to advance public awareness of Anglo-Sudanese history in the period 1883-1956 through the restoration and preservation of the river gunboat Melik and the paddle steamer Bordein. The Society was a registered charity formed in 1994 by a group of individuals with a common interest in the history of the Sudan and her relationship with the United Kingdom. It became defunct c. 2014, but its journal The Gunboat did publish some articles on Sudan Railways.

Sudan Railways produced an in-house magazine from 1937-48. Originally entitled Sudan Railways Bulletin it changed to Sudan Railways Magazine in 1945, in both English and Arabic.

In producing these research files use has been made of the following reference source: TRANSPORT RESEARCH BIBLIOGRAPHY, Gordon Pirie, African Centre for Cities University of Cape Town December 2018, however much additional material has been added. In that respect Hill Sudan Transport was most useful.
