Reference Sources for Botswana, Zambian and Zimbabwean Railways

Wankie Line, 1903

Following on from the Nigerian reference sources this document is to assist in research on the railways of Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.  You are encouraged to look at the general African file for further ideas especially for railways in neighbouring countries.

Firstly, a word of warning, there has been a spate in recent years of people finding books that are out of copyright, OCR’ing them and offering the copies for sale. Admittedly they do warn that the copies may not be perfect.  The Trust brought a copy of a French book on African Colonial Railways that is extremely rare but found that no more than 25% of the pages were legible.

All three countries have detailed but dated history of their railways.

On this page, the term Rhodesia Railways as an overarching cover for the current Botswana, Zambian and Zimbabwean Railways, and their various constituents, which include Beira and Mashonaland Railway, Rhodesia Railways, the National Railways of Zimbabwe etc.   It has proved a bit confusing as to if an article should be in the Rhodesian section, or Zambia or Zimbabwe.  It was decided to list articles with reference to which country they referred to, so there are some articles on Northern Rhodesia in the Rhodesian section rather than the Zambian section.

Some of the titles below are available in the British Library and can be found by searching their catalogue.

Journal articles listed should be available through JSTOR or appropriate online sources.

In producing these research files use has been made of the following reference source: TRANSPORT RESEARCH BIBLIOGRAPHY, Gordon Pirie, African Centre for Cities University of Cape Town December 2018, however much additional material has been added.

The Rhodesiana Society started publishing in 1956 and the volumes produced until 1979 are available for download at Publications of the Rhodesiana Society.  Subsequent to Rhodesia becoming Zimbabwe the Journal continued as Heritage of Zimbabwe commencing in 1981 but unfortunately, they are not available online nor is there a listing of articles produced.

There was also a Rhodesian History Journal produced from 1970-78 by the Central African Historical Association.   Again, there seems to be no listing of articles produced.

Zimbabwe Field Guide is a website that has articles on various aspects of Zimbabwe and some of these are railway related.

The Rhodesia Railway Review started publication in 1911 and continued until 1984 when it changed its name to Railroader and then continued until 2004.  BORHT has various issues dating from 1952.

There is a Railway Museum in Bulawayo.  It is situated behind the Bulawayo Railway Station, in the Raylton suburb of Bulawayo.  Access is possible via the pedestrian footbridge at the station. The museum is located in an area that was previously a workshop used in the maintenance of refrigeration wagons.  Opened in 1972, the Museum displays a wealth of small exhibits and models as well as steam and diesel electric locomotives.  The Museum is owned by the National Railways of Zimbabwe and is managed by the NRZ Historical Committee, made up of railwaymen from various departments.  It does not seem to have it’s own webpage, but there is a Friends of the Bulawayo Railway Museum on Facebook.  There is also the NRZ webpage  or try My Guide Zimbabwe.

There is also the Kadoma Steam Centre.
